Pastel Portraits from Photos:
Creating a Keepsake, not a Glamor Shot

Pastel Portrait by Delys Nast

Tuesday January 11, 2022 1:00 – 5:00

Instructor: Delys Nast

Pastel gives a beautiful soft texture to any portrait with a warmth not captured in photographs, through the use of blending and creative techniques.

Learn a few ways to simplify a photo for portraits that speak to the subjects personality and transforms the image into a painting. Sometimes all it takes is that extra highlight or a splash of unexpected color to take your painting to that next level. In this 4-5 hour workshop you will do just that, while keeping it simple, relaxed and fun. Supplies are included but if you have pastels you like using, bring them. No need to buy your own supplies just for this class.

   • Advice on basic materials: guidance on building, storing, and organizing a collection of pastels; choosing the right paper; and the importance of experimentation and simplicity

   • Study of the working process: lessons on proportion, gesture, composition, color, application, identifying and correcting problems, and recognizing when a work is finished

   • Finding the painting within a photo: how to extrapolate and simplified an image, find subtle details, and bring out the personality of whatever you choose to paint

   • Step-by-step demonstrations: Delys shares insights into her own works as they progress

Class participants will be asked to send Delys the photo they wish to paint in advance of the class.

Cost: $35 for Members, $45 for Non-Members.

Rosemaling is a decorative art that originated in Norway during the 1800s. Artists traveled their home valleys to bring prestige and color to churches, homes and furnishings. This class is for beginners. Using oil paints (but no toxic solvents), you’ll learn basic design elements, color palettes and brush strokes. Then you’ll follow a pattern to decorate a flat, wooden Easter egg just in time for the holiday.
